MCA vs. business loan: questions to compare
A comparison outline to help business owners understand the differences in structure, cost and obligations.
Start with the structure
A merchant cash advance is generally structured as a purchase of a portion of future receivables. A business loan is a borrowing arrangement with repayment obligations. Products and legal treatment depend on the specific agreement and applicable law. This comparison is educational, not legal advice.
Compare total cost, not only payment size
Request the total amount paid or sold, all fees, the expected timing and amount of payments, and any payoff, prepayment or reconciliation terms. Compare offers using written documents and your own advisors.
Understand variable receipts
Ask what happens if your sales drop or receipts change. Do not assume an MCA automatically adjusts remittances; the agreement controls.
Questions to ask
What is the complete cost? How often are payments collected? Are there personal guarantees, liens or other obligations? What are the consequences of missed payments? Can the terms be changed?
